Cosima Wagner Diaries

Continuation of this life; the Vogl couple have arrived from Munich — Herr Unger causes much trouble. Even greater, however, are the difficulties with the theatre construction: it has become clear that the building supervisor [1] was not equal to his task, having neglected everything, so that Brandt is in utter despair — nothing is ready. The Vogls sang the first scene from “Tannhäuser” very well, astonishing in their musical certainty. (Many letters written early in the day, among them one to the bird-maker gentleman [2] in London.) In the evening, a few of our Bayreuth folk joined our guests.

[1] Runckwitz.

[2] Referring to Richard Keene, a maker of props in London, who was requested to make several props for Bayreuth that included two ravens for “Götterdämmerung”.

Revised English translation by Jo Cousins.
