Cosima Wagner Diaries

Fair autumnal weather after a heavy thunderstorm. R. attends solely to correspondence, and I to friendship. On Monday the 30th, our excellent friends dine with us once more, and on Tuesday the 31st they depart, to our great sorrow. –

In the afternoon, beneath gloomy skies, we walk with all the children; the weather clears, and we reach the cellar of the Angermann tavern, a scene like a painting of Teniers;[1] we seat ourselves by the great gate, “Quasimodo” brings the filled glasses up from the deepest depths, above, a sort of window opens at the side, casks are stacked one upon another, the coopers move to and fro, the children run into the cavern where light glimmers in the distance, outside the cows graze, and by us the three dogs. A most cheerful return home.

[1] David Tenier (1610-1690), Flemish painter, preferred scenes from Flemish folk life, motifs of festivals and taverns.

Revised English translation by Jo Cousins.
