Cosima Wagner Diaries

In the night I heard R.’s gentle voice whisper: “You dear wife, the only thing I possess, the only being who understood me and took pity on me.” — Much sadness gathers within me; not an hour passes, no beautiful image is created, no great impression, without me thinking of the One—“oh, now were we consecrated to the night!” [1] — A letter from the Mother Superior: the children are to undergo an orthopedic cure, great concern! Some letters written; first to the Mother Superior. — R. goes for a walk; beautiful autumn weather.

[1] Cosima is (slightly misquoting) Act II, scene 2, “Tristan und Isolde”: “O, nun waren wir Nacht-Geweihte!”.

Revised English translation by Jo Cousins.
