Cosima Wagner Diaries

Morning and afternoon, orthopedic examinations and exercises—great caution needed. The Minister, Herr von Gerstenberg, benefactor of the little land, visits me; a most agreeable conversation. In the evening to the theatre. A wretched piece by Herr Schweitzer [1] (a Socialist!), coarse and foolish. – Yet the children, for whom it was intended, are well entertained.

[1] Jean Baptist von Schweitzer (1833-1875), a German playwright, was close to Lassalle, a Social Democratic member of the Reichstag in 1867, and also wrote historical plays; RW* saw “The Darwinians,” a comedy in 1875.

*probably incorrect, rather “CW” for Cosima Wagner.
