Cosima Wagner Diaries

Visit from good Dean Dittmar [1], who chats long with me; in the afternoon our dear friend Feustel is to make his exposé with R. A fine day, a walk with R.; Fidi ever playing at railway: “If you are not a genius, you will at least be an engineer.” “The Viceroy of Egypt—if you wish to give him an order!”—R.’s latest rhyme. In the evening Herr Lalas takes his leave, which leads us to the Greek idiom and to the Iliad; R. reads aloud to us the first book. – – – Eighteen years ago I became betrothed to Hans!

Not only generous with the awarding of medals: Ismail Pasha, Vice-King of Egypt. The country was already bankrupt by 1875 (due in part to his expansionist policies and the enormous debts incurred during the construction of the Suez Canal) and was placed under the financial control of Great Britain and France (Photo: Marubi, 1875).

[1] Johann Christian Wilhelm Dittmar (1801 – 1877) was a german protestant dean and politician. Allegedly, Cosima had converted to the Protestant faith through his influence.
