Cosima Wagner Diaries

Returned home at 9 o’clock; a dreary morning, yet a splendid day. Took a solitary walk in Berneck, which pleases me more than Alexandersbad. Alas, the concerns over lodging the visitors next year weigh so heavily that they once again entangle us in discussions which invariably cast a sombre mood. Yet amid all this, once more, the A major symphony and its mysticism — that introduction, wherein one might imagine certain parts continuing perpetually, though at times unheard, only to rejoin the others in the ideal dance of the Allegro. Returned home at 7 o’clock; delight in the house. Early to bed. Found the book by Schuré,[1] rich in phraseology, and full of keen insight and delicate feeling.
