Cosima Wagner Diari

R. entreats Director Jauner to visit him, that he may make his disclosures to him; the Director is so alarmed at the very thought that R. might depart, that the latter now gives him his promise to continue his efforts with “Lohengrin”! Deep vexation on this account… Prince Liechtenstein brings his son Ulrich to Fidi—children’s play. Countess Krockow sends me a report from America, wherein much is said of Hans’s successes! I no longer have the strength to rejoice over it, being ever conscious of the dreadful ill-star that rules here so cruelly. O God, when shall this boundless woe come to an end? I hear much evil of Marie Hohenlohe; she is truly malicious and false. Performance of “Nero” by Herr Wilbrandt[1]—no pleasure; whereupon followed the still lesser pleasure of an evening at Herr Scaria’s, which I attend in order that he may not send Hagen away and estrange others besides! …

[1] Tragedy by Adolf Wilbrandt, 1872.
