Took leave. Shortly thereafter a new visitor, a Professor Gosche [1] from Halle, who wishes to give a report upon the enterprise; a most agreeable man, recommended to us by Hermann Brockhaus. In the evening, happy at last to be once more alone together; we continue with Goethe’s Annals. — 

Early this morning at five o’clock the German Emperor passed through Bayreuth, though none were aware of it. The King’s popularity, through his conduct, is altogether without bounds.


[1] Richard Gosche (1824-1889), German literary historian and orientalist, professor in Halle since 1863, wrote, among other things, “Richard Wagner’s Female Characters”.
