Cosima Wagner Diaries

Good night for all; R. writes to Dr. Jauner, in very earnest terms, against Tristan and Isolde in Vienna with Vogl. We discuss what Betz and what Niemann may reply; it is most grievous to deal with beings who speak an altogether different language. R. says, rightly, that he expects too extraordinary things from these artists, not to attempt to draw nearer to them on a human level; yet it is from this desire that the misunderstanding arises. The medalist Scharff is here, designing a new medal of R. In the evening, “Much Ado About Nothing”, great merriment thereby.
