Still occupied with household duties, I hope to manage things so that R. feels well and at ease. He dines today with Mr. Rose, I with Elisabeth and the children. Late in the evening, R. returns home, quite pleased to be reunited with these people. Mr. Rose[1] brought him a nice toast, telling him that he had experienced how, in Hamburg and elsewhere, people had once mocked the Bayreuth venture, but now they say that the greatness of the man has defeated us. R. toasts to Bayreuth.
[1] Carl R. (1842-1889) was concertmaster in Hamburg in 1863 and later worked in London and America from 1865, where he was known as Rosa. He was a conductor and impresario.
