I had the distinct impression today that all things here below are subjected to some form of penance, even that which should bring joy! R. is ailing, dispirited by the present state of affairs. Feustel recounts how unworthy the government has been in stripping him of the lease to the Kissinger waters. The sole source of comfort has been the arrival of Miss Nietzsche; she is fair, amiable, and of a cheerful disposition, and intends to remain here during our absence.
