R. sets out to see Wölffel, in order finally to obtain clarity regarding the inn matter. He does indeed obtain it — namely, that all will cost more than originally anticipated. –

In the afternoon, examination of the two girls in arithmetic, during which R. remarks concerning the decimal system that it is, in truth, quite artificially imposed in its linearity, whereas the duodecimal system would be much more natural; the six days of the week, one added thereto, the twelve lunar cycles — these are more folkish and flexible; the decimal system is more convenient for bankers. R. at the theatre; I write many letters and give lessons to the children. He returns from the theatre not in the best of spirits; further discussion of the inn — furnished, it would cost as much as 400,000 gulden for accommodation of 600 persons! … –

In the evening, Herr Unger, who seems to be gaining courage, and Herr Rubinstein, with whom R. performs the F-sharp major[1] Sonata and the F minor[2] of Beethoven. Conversation concerning the works of Berlioz; and of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, where R., as a boy, once smuggled himself in and encountered his uncle there. Of Beethoven, that one imagines to grasp him — and he always eludes; R.: It seems to him as though he has never heard the like anywhere else.
